Overview

This project involved the development of a custom stowage compartment integrated into the rear door of a Ford Transit van.

Using high-accuracy 3D scanning, the existing vehicle geometry was captured and used as a foundation to design a storage solution tailored to the client’s requirements. The objective was to create a practical and well-integrated design that fits precisely within the vehicle’s constraints.

Challenge

Designing a component for an existing vehicle structure required precise alignment with real-world geometry. The rear door surface includes complex shapes and interfaces that cannot be reliably recreated using manual measurements alone.

The solution needed to ensure:

  • accurate fitment

  • efficient use of available space

  • compatibility with vehicle geometry

Process

  • High-resolution 3D scanning of the Ford Transit rear door

  • Processing and alignment of scan data

  • Creation of reference geometry for design

  • CAD modelling of the stowage compartment

  • Iterative refinement based on client input

Result

A complete 3D CAD model of the stowage solution was delivered, enabling accurate manufacturing and installation.

The final design:

  • fits precisely to the vehicle geometry

  • meets the client’s functional requirements

  • is ready for production workflows
